Early Broncos (1966-1977) had no factory evaporative-emissions hardware. A Vapor Trapper is a clean retrofit that addresses garage fumes and is robust enough for trail use when paired with a rollover/check valve.
What your vehicle came with from the factory
Federal evap requirements began with the 1971 model year for passenger cars but did not apply to light trucks like the Bronco until somewhat later. Most early Broncos in service today never had a factory canister. The main fuel tank sits between the frame rails ahead of the rear bumper; some configurations added an auxiliary tank under the passenger seat for extended range.
What's vehicle-specific to watch for
- Worth identifying your tank arrangement — main only, or main + aux. Aux-tank trucks need the selector valve preserved and the vent path verified for both tanks.
- Confirm the tank vent path is unobstructed before routing to the canister — original vent hoses are typically hardened by now.
- If you wheel the Bronco, consider installing a rollover/liquid-check valve inline; the short wheelbase means steep approach and departure angles are common.
- Many builders switch to a non-vented gas cap when adding the canister.
- Engine-bay space is generous on 289/302-equipped trucks, less so with the 351W swap; the Low-Profile Vapor Trapper is worth considering on tight builds.
Notable years & fun facts
- The early Bronco was conceived by Donald Frey, Ford's product manager who also shepherded the Mustang to production — both launched within two years of each other.
- Roughly 17,000-18,000 Bronco Half-Cab pickups were built across the 1966-1972 run — far rarer than the wagon, though not as scarce as long-running myth suggested.
- Larry Minor and Rod Hall won the 1969 Baja 1000 overall in a Bronco — still the only outright Baja 1000 win by a 4x4 vehicle.
For the actual installation steps, see the universal Vapor Trapper installation guide — the procedure is the same across vehicles, only the routing and mounting changes.
