Charcoal Canister Notes: Jeep CJ, YJ, and TJ

Jeep CJ-7 blueprint with fuel system and evaporative canister detail

Jeep CJ, YJ, and TJ owners face two related challenges: fuel-vapor fumes when parked, and the risk of liquid fuel migrating into the canister during off-camber wheeling. Both are addressable with a Vapor Trapper plus the right inline valve.

What your vehicle came with from the factory

Pre-1972 CJ models had no factory canister. From 1972 forward, Jeeps shipped with factory evap hardware under federal mandate. The factory canister location varies: CJs typically mounted it on the firewall or inner fender; YJs (1987-1995) used an engine-bay location; TJs (1997-2006) moved between an under-hood and rear-of-vehicle location depending on production year and configuration. Worth confirming your specific year before measuring for mount points.

What's vehicle-specific to watch for

  • The single most impactful addition for off-road use is a rollover/liquid-check valve installed between the tank vent and the canister inlet. Without one, liquid fuel can reach the charcoal during steep articulation and saturate the media.
  • If you wheel the Jeep, consider skid-plate clearance around any underbody-mounted canister; relocating to the engine bay is a common upgrade for serious trail use.
  • Fuel-injected TJs use an ECU-monitored purge solenoid — leaving it in the circuit keeps fuel trims clean and avoids CEL codes.
  • The Low-Profile Vapor Trapper is worth considering for tight TJ engine bays, especially with the 4.0L inline-six.

Notable years & fun facts

  • The CJ ("Civilian Jeep") traces its lineage directly to the WWII MB and GPW — the CJ-2A, sold from 1945, was the first mass-market civilian 4x4.
  • The 1987 Wrangler YJ replaced 42 years of round headlights with rectangular sealed-beams — a change that ran the full YJ generation through 1995 before the 1997 TJ restored round lights.
  • The TJ (1997-2006) brought back round headlights and added coil-spring suspension front and rear — the first Wrangler with coils, a meaningful articulation upgrade over the YJ's leaf springs.

For the actual installation steps, see the universal Vapor Trapper installation guide — the procedure is the same across vehicles, only the routing and mounting changes.
